Pandemic response game icons

In order to assist the designers of pandemic response serious games, I have compiled and prepared a set of 68 COVID-19 themed game icons. These are available in zipped folders in three graphic formats: jpgs, pngs, and transparent pngs.

We typically use these in conjunction with 25mm or 37mm disks, the latter being the size included in the Matrix Game Construction Kit. These can be formatted for 3/4″ and 1″ Avery labels respectively using Avery’s excellent online design application and label templates. However, you can use them in any way you wish for the purposes of education and scenario analysis relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For further resources, see PAXsim’s COVID-19 serious gaming resources page.

Hehe. Depends on how you like things like blues and rock :) Although…”I Wanna Be Sedated” might make a good background track…

A pandemic soundtrack playing in the background would certainly enhance the engagement of any game!

Mart, if your gifts are musical we are happy to accept submissions for the official PAXsims COVID-19 serious anti-pandemic gaming song!

@Tom: that’s why it was only a minor comment. I realise that especially the haste in which they were made makes them vulnerable to unconscious biases. For me it at first only struck me in the Nurse/Doctor icons, and only on going back did I see that more were explicitly gendered. Again, to be expected, people pick the first image that comes up in their minds, and those images *will* be gendered. It’s not a disqualification, just noting how pervasive these biases can be.

And if you want me to create icons, I hope you’re happy with stick figures :) My artistic talents are verbal and musical, not graphical at all, I’m afraid.

But on the other hand: great work!

Great point, Mart! Tom is already creating some more gender-neutral icons and we will update the files as those become available.

You are absolutely invited, even encouraged, to add and share your own representative icons to this freely available set that was quickly assembled to aid in the rapid prototyping of COVID-19 games.

May i make a minor comment here: why are certain icon elements (Politician, doctor, nurse, the police/border officers) gender-coded? Is using neutral silhouettes and removing the ties not better?
